About the artwork
The Olympic Games held in Stockholm 1912 is remembered as “the Sunshine Olympics”. That nickname came from the beautiful weather – sunshine everyday – as well as from the feeling of a peaceful and content society. The games were also introducing a new model of efficiency – this was the first time automatic timing devices was used for track events and the photo at the finishing line.
The Swedish Olympic Committee accepted Olle Hjortzbergs poster as the offical poster for the games, after thoroughly examinating several sketches from prominent Swedish artist. The poster is a symbol of unity – athlete from different countries waving flags and all having the same goal, the Olympic Games.
The nudity, that was a reference to the Antic, was a bit too much for some people and lead to the people not being distributed in some countries. 80 000 posters was however distributed, in 16 different languages.
