In spring 1893, the first spring festival was held at Skansen in Stockholm on the initiative of Skansen’s founder Artur Hazelius. The festival ended on June 6th with a large flag festival. In 1916, a board for the Swedish Flag Day was formed to promote a national gathering around the flag. This beautiful poster by Gustaf Ankacrona was created for that event.
Thus, 6 June officially became Swedish Flag Day. The idea was to create a day of ”unity and understanding between all Swedes”, regardless of political colour. Flag Day became Sweden’s official national day in 1983 and a national holiday from 2005.
